It was so refreshing to be around successful, hardworking women and men. But it
also hurt to ride down the streets and see how we have blemished ourselves and
made THE MAN very successful.
On every billboard was an advertisement for GAP,
Victoria's Secret, Old Navy. On just about every person a walking advertisement
for Tommy, Timberland, Abercombie and Fitch. There were huge signs posted on
every corner for our degrading music, debt management, and divorce. But in not
one space or crevice, a positive note, a successful note, except in one store
window on 125th street called Harlem Office Supply.
The book titled "Wake Up and Smell the Dollars! Whose Inner City is This
Anyway!" by Dorothy Pitman Hughes graces the window. It tells a story of woman
that cares so much for her community and empowerment she puts her home and
business on the line.
She is making great attempts to challenge the community
with a chance...a $1 chance. But the bigger challenge is to convince a city
that our people are sophisticated enough to want to socially and financially
empower ourselves.
Ms. Hughes, a woman who dares to confront our controversial society, a woman
with a dream of teaching her people that if you wear it, invest in it. If you buy
it, invest in it. If you like it, invest in it. Her point is, you don't have to
stop patronizing the companies you love but also reap the benefits that these
companies are making off of you.
