Kurt Schmoke was born in Baltimore on December 1, 1949. He attended the City's Public Schools. In 1971, he graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in History. In 1976, he received his law degree from the Harvard Law School.
He entered into practice in 1977 with the Baltimore firm of Piper and Marbury. Later, he joined the White House Domestic staff while President Carter was serving his presidency. The following year, he returned to Baltimore as an Assistant United States Attorney.
Four years later, he was elected as State's Attorney, the City's Chief prosecuting officer.
On November 3, 1987, he was elected mayor of Baltimore. He developed a reputation for being one of the most innovative mayors of the nation. In November of 1995, he was re-elected to serve as mayor, which was his third term.
