The first African American owned radio station -- WERD in Atlanta -- began broadcasting 52 years ago. The first radio news network owned and operated by African Americans -- the National Black Network -- was founded in 1973.
Today, there are over 10-thousand commercial radio stations on the air around the nation. Slightly over 10-percent of them have formats aimed at African American audiences.
The entire field of electronic communications is attracting more and more African Americans. Some 15- hundred firms -- radio, television, cable and telephone companies -- are owned by African Americans.
