Son of James Julian, oldest of six children, husband of Dr. Anna Julian and father of two, Percy L. Julian made notable contributions which aided society.
He was a man of many great medical discoveries. He developed a way of making inexpensive medicinal drugs from soybean instead of through expensive animal products which were imported from Europe. Not only did he use his soybean products in medicine, but in other areas such as: the manufacture of paint, paper, hormones and vitamins.
Dr. Julian produced over 100 patents in his lifetime in which he was able to develop a process for the large production of two important hormones. Testosterone and progesterone. He is known for his creation of Compound S, which enabled those who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis to regain the use of their limbs.
Percy's field of interest while studying was organic chemistry. However, even upon graduating at the top of his class, he was discouraged from further advancement. He was unable to get a job or entrance into a PhD program. He was instructed to pursue a teaching profession or even entrepreneurship. This however, was not what he wanted at the time.
After much persistence, he was able to receive financial assistance in order to pursue his doctorate in chemistry, which he earned at the University of Vienna in Austria.
Many years later, Dr. Julian was president of two companies, which he opened in order to produce his medicines. Percy L. Julian was honored with numerous citations and degrees from nine universities and received many other awards and distinctions such as the Spingarn Medal of the NAACP in 1947.
Dr. Percy L. Julian made many notable contributions to society, and as a result we too can learn from him. We should not put restrictions on our lives, but encourage each other to pursue their goals, because it is never known what we may do that will contribute the society at large.
