In 1998, I read an article in Essence magazine about a woman attempting to
economically empower the children and adults of Harlem. Her name was Dorothy
Pitman Hughes. Ms. Hughes was offering stocks at $1 per share. I was so
touched and impressed by her attempts that I contacted Ms. Hughes myself.
She
was (and is) a very warm, spiritual and strong Black woman. Ms. Hughes
enlightened me on her endeavor to teach the African American community about
ownership. I continued to hear about her in Fortune, Success, US News and World
Report and Oprah. I have taken a personal interest in her goal.
I went to New York this past weekend to visit Harlem Office Supply and to
finally meet Ms. Hughes. It was a wonderful experience to finally put a face to
the person I had read so much about. While in Harlem I was able to witness what
we have fought so long to overcome oppression.
I met several black business
owners that are being pushed out of Harlem with such tactics as raising rent to
unbearable rates that they cannot survive... to the city threatening to buy
their businesses from them and submit them to the new owners.
